EDITORS COMMENTS
Anne Boleyn, the enigmatic and ambitious second wife of King Henry VIII, is depicted in this exquisite 16th-century portrait, known as the "Cibot Type" or "Type A" image. The print, held by Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a captivating glimpse into the life of one of the most intriguing figures in English history. Anne Boleyn, born in 1501, was the daughter of a wealthy and influential family. She first came to the attention of King Henry VIII around 1526, and their romantic relationship began in 1527. Anne's determination to become queen led her to bear King Henry's illegitimate son, Henry FitzRoy, in 1533. However, she was unable to provide the king with a male heir, and her position grew increasingly precarious. The portrait itself is believed to have been painted around 1536, the year of Anne's downfall. She was accused of adultery and treason, and was ultimately beheaded on May 19, 1536. The image of Anne in this print, with her striking gaze and elegant attire, belies the tragic end to her story. The "Cibot Type" portrait is named after the French collector, Pierre Cibot, who owned a copy of the image in the 18th century. It is one of the most famous depictions of Anne Boleyn, and has been widely reproduced in books, films, and other media. The print's intricate details and rich colors offer a window into the past, allowing us to connect with Anne Boleyn in a way that transcends time. Anne Boleyn's story is one of love, power, and betrayal, and this portrait serves as a poignant reminder of the complexities of the human experience. The image invites us to ponder the choices Anne made, the motivations that drove her, and the legacy she left behind. As we gaze upon her enigmatic visage, we are transported back to a time of royal intrigue and political upheaval, and are reminded of the enduring power of history to captivate and inspire us.
