EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 14th century miniature, found in Manuscript number 26 of the Codex in the University of Valencia Library in Spain, depicts the legendary founding of Rome by Romulus and Remus. The scene is filled with intricate details that bring the story to life. Romulus, depicted as a regal king, stands atop a hill, holding a crown and a scepter, as he gazes upon the city he is about to build. Below him, a group of soldiers, some on horseback and others on foot, construct the walls of the new city using ladders and tools. A knight, perhaps representing Remus, looks on from a distance, holding a letter in his hand. The miniature is a masterpiece of medieval art, created during the Middle Aages, and is attributed to the Italian writer Francesco Petrarca, also known as Petrarch (1304-1374). Petrarch was a prominent figure in Italian literature and is considered one of the early humanists. His works had a profound influence on the development of the Renaissance. The miniature is a testament to the rich history and cultural heritage of Italy and Rome. It depicts the ancient myth of Romulus and Remus, which has been retold for centuries, and continues to be a source of inspiration for artists, writers, and scholars. The intricate details of the miniature reveal the skill and artistry of the medieval artist, and offer a glimpse into the world of the Middle Ages. The University of Valencia Library in Spain is home to a vast collection of manuscripts and codices, including this precious miniature. It is a reminder of the important role that libraries play in preserving and sharing the knowledge and culture of the past, and in inspiring new generations to explore the rich history and heritage of their world.
