EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we are transported back to the 1940s during World War II. The image showcases a group of Yugoslav partisans from Marshal Tito's Yugoslav National Liberation Army who have found refuge in Malta. Seizing the opportunity, they are making good use of their stay by acquiring valuable skills in handling both Allied and enemy small arms. Under the guidance of British instructors, these brave fighters are honing their marksmanship abilities while also receiving training on Bren carriers from officers and other ranks of the Kings Own Maltese Regiment. It is worth noting that all these individuals were once hospital patients seeking treatment in Malta. Now, having fully recovered, they have been sent to their own camp for further training under the leadership of a Yugoslav Major. The photograph specifically captures an extraordinary moment as female partisan troops attentively learn how to operate a Bren gun. This powerful depiction highlights not only their determination but also challenges traditional gender roles within armed forces during wartime. Preserved by Memory Lane Prints, this remarkable snapshot offers us a glimpse into history - showcasing the resilience and courage displayed by resistance fighters like these Yugoslav partisans amidst one of humanity's darkest chapters.
