Simeon Kneels in Front of Mary and Jesus After Recognizing Them, from a Mirror of Holiness
Simeon Kneels in Front of Mary and Jesus After Recognizing Them, from a Mirror of Holiness (Mir at al-quds) of Father Jerome Xavier, 1602-1604. Simeon had heard a prophecy that he would encounter the Messiah with his mother in the temple at Jerusalem. This painting depicts his moment of recognition that the prophecy had come true. The temple is populated by Jewish teachers and scholars, and a number of unusual visual elements. A dragon-headed vase is set by the stairs; curled dogs and a kneeling figure are carved like bas-reliefs into the pillars of the temple, which also has niches for vases. The form of the temple itself seems to be an imaginative combination of Hindu temple and Mughal palace architecture

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we are transported back in time to witness a profound moment of realization and fulfillment. Simeon, an elderly man with a look of awe on his face, kneels before Mary and Jesus in the temple at Jerusalem. This powerful scene captures the exact instant when Simeon recognizes that he has encountered the long-awaited Messiah. The painting is rich in intricate details that add depth and symbolism to the composition. Surrounding Simeon, we see Jewish teachers and scholars engaged in their studies within the temple's walls. However, it is the unusual visual elements that truly captivate our attention - a dragon-headed vase placed by the stairs, intricately carved dogs and a kneeling figure adorning pillars, as well as niches for vases within the temple. The artist's imagination shines through in their depiction of this sacred space. The temple itself appears to be an imaginative fusion of Hindu temple architecture and Mughal palace design from Northern India during the Mughal period. This exquisite artwork was created using opaque watercolor on paper with delicate strokes that bring life to every detail. Preserved by Heritage Art/Heritage Images, this print allows us to appreciate both its historical significance and artistic brilliance. As we gaze upon this image captured from Father Jerome Xavier's Mirror of Holiness manuscript dating back to 1602-1604, we cannot help but feel moved by Simeon's profound recognition that prophecy had indeed come true.
