Study for The Presentation of Christ in the Temple (for Saint Ulrich, Vienna), c
Study for " The Presentation of Christ in the Temple" (for Saint Ulrich, Vienna), c. 1750. This loosely painted sketch is the preliminary design for an altarpiece in the Church of Saint Ulrich, Vienna. Mary and Joseph have brought the infant Jesus to the temple to be inducted into the Jewish faith; the aged priest Simeon cradles the infant in his arms, turning his gaze to heaven as he realizes that he is holding the Son of God. Strong contrasts of light and shadow underscore the drama of the moment. The frame is not original to this painting, but was made by an Austrian craftsman in the mid-1700s. Its florid style suits Maulbertschs flickering brushwork, and reflects the tradition of wood sculpture from Central Europe seen in other objects in the CMAs collection

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a study for "The Presentation of Christ in the Temple" by Franz Anton Maulbertsch, created around 1750. The loose brushwork and vibrant colors of this preliminary design serve as the foundation for an altarpiece located in the Church of Saint Ulrich, Vienna. In this scene, Mary and Joseph have brought their infant son Jesus to the temple to be initiated into the Jewish faith. The elderly priest Simeon tenderly cradles the baby in his arms, his gaze turned towards heaven as he realizes that he is holding the Son of God. The artist skillfully employs strong contrasts between light and shadow to intensify the dramatic nature of this sacred moment. Although not original to this painting, the ornate frame was crafted by an Austrian artisan during the mid-1700s. Its elaborate style harmonizes perfectly with Maulbertsch's flickering brushwork while also reflecting Central European wood sculpture traditions evident in other objects within CMAs collection. Through this print from Heritage Art/Heritage Images, viewers are invited to appreciate both Maulbertsch's artistic prowess and his contribution to religious iconography during Austria's 18th-century cultural heritage.
