Allscott Sugar Beet Factory JLP01_08_060530
Allscott Sugar Beet Factory, Allscott, Wrockwardine, Telford and Wrekin. A view from scaffolding during the construction of a sugar silo at the Allscott Sugar Beet Factory, showing some of the team working on the site and concrete being poured from a hopper.
A sugar beet factory was at Allscott from 1927 until it closed in 2007. Laing built two sugar silos here in 1961 for the British Sugar Corporation who were the owners of the site. Each silo was able to store 10, 000 tons of granulated sugar and at the time they were constructed, they were the tallest that Laing had built so far using sliding formwork

1960s Construction People At Work Scaffolding Sugar Silo
EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the construction of the Allscott Sugar Beet Factory. Taken from scaffolding, it offers a bird's-eye view of the site as workers diligently toil away on various tasks. The focal point of the image is a sugar silo under construction, with concrete being poured from a hopper. This particular factory was operational from 1927 until its closure in 2007, and this photograph showcases an important phase in its history. The two sugar silos seen here were built by Laing in 1961 for the British Sugar Corporation, who owned the factory at that time. These towering structures had an impressive storage capacity of 10,000 tons each and were considered to be Laing's tallest sliding formwork constructions up until then. The image not only provides insight into the industrial processes involved but also highlights the dedication and teamwork exhibited by those working on-site. It serves as a testament to their commitment towards creating a functional facility for processing sugar beet. Preserved within Historic England Archive, this print allows us to appreciate both the architectural achievements and human effort behind such monumental projects. As we gaze upon this snapshot frozen in time, we are reminded of how industries shape our landscapes and communities throughout history.
