A sugar beet factory was at Allscott from 1927 until it closed in 2007. Laing built two sugar silos here in 1961 for the British Sugar Corporation who were the owners of the site. Each silo was able to store 10, 000 tons of granulated sugar and at the time they were constructed, they were the tallest that Laing had built so far using sliding formwork. The stressing cables were post-tensioned with a load of 50 tons to prevent the walls bursting from the weight of the stored sugar

Taken from the base of a newly constructed sugar silo, our eyes are drawn upward to witness a remarkable scaffolding tower that was erected for the purpose of post-tensioning stressing cables around the silo. The history behind this iconic factory is equally fascinating. From 1927 until its closure in 2007, Allscott housed a thriving sugar beet factory. In 1961, Laing, renowned builders at the time, were commissioned by the British Sugar Corporation to construct two towering sugar silos on this very site. These colossal structures had an astounding capacity to store up to 10,000 tons of granulated sugar each and were considered Laing's tallest achievement yet using sliding formwork techniques. One cannot help but marvel at the engineering prowess required to ensure these walls could withstand such immense weight without bursting. The stressing cables running through them were meticulously post-tensioned with an astonishing load of 50 tons. This ingenious solution guaranteed that no matter how much sugar was stored within these walls, they would remain steadfast and secure.
