EDITORS COMMENTS
This triptych, taken from 'Scenes in Europe' published by John Harris in London in 1819, offers a glimpse into the diverse and breathtaking landscapes of early 19th century Norway. The first scene (No. 7) depicts a fox skillfully catching crabs on the rocky beach, a common sight along Norway's rugged coastline. The Fox's keen senses and agility are on full display as it expertly paws at the crabs, hidden among the rocks, and deftly snatches them up in its jaws. In the second scene (No. 8), a shepherd is shown in traditional Norwegian costume, bravely recovering a lost sheep from the treacherous slopes of a mountain. The harsh, unforgiving terrain is evident in the steep, rocky inclines and the ominous clouds looming overhead. The shepherd's determined expression and the steadfastness of his companions, who help him secure the sheep, speak to the resilience and resourcefulness of the Norwegian people. The third and most dramatic scene (No. 9) portrays a ship being pulled into the maelstrom of Norway's infamous Moskstraumen whirlpool. The wind-whipped waves and the chaotic swirls of water create a sense of urgency and danger, as sailors frantically try to keep their vessel from being sucked under. The hand-coloured copperplate engraving masterfully captures the raw power of nature and the courage of those who dared to brave its wrath. These vivid and intricately detailed images, taken from Rev. Isaac Taylor's educational book for children, offer a fascinating window into the history, culture, and natural wonders of Norway during the Regency and Georgian eras. The captions, which accompany each scene, provide valuable context and insights, making this an invaluable resource for those interested in European history and children's education.
