Born in New York City in 1810, McCloskey was educated at St. Mary's College in Maryland and St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore. He was ordained a priest in 1837 and went on to serve as a pastor, a professor of theology, and a bishop before being appointed Archbishop of New York in 1864. During his tenure as Archbishop, McCloskey oversaw the construction of St. Patrick's Cathedral, the largest Catholic church in the country at the time. He also played a key role in the establishment of the Catholic University of America and the creation of the Catholic Charities organization. McCloskey's influence extended beyond the Catholic community, as he was a vocal advocate for education and social reform. He worked to improve conditions in the city's tenements and was a strong supporter of the public school system. Despite facing challenges, including anti-Catholic sentiment and financial difficulties, McCloskey remained dedicated to his faith and his mission to serve the people of New York.
