EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "Isabel of Angoulême: A Regal Figure from the Effigy at Fontevraud Abbey" Isabel of Angoulême, the third wife of King John of England (1167-1216), is depicted in this exquisite handcolored engraving from the "Civil Costume of England from the Conquest to the Present Period." Drawn by Charles Martin and etched by Leopold Martin, this illustration offers a captivating glimpse into the fashion and elegance of the medieval period. Isabel's effigy, housed at Fontevraud Abbey in France, served as the inspiration for this meticulously detailed representation. The engraving captures the intricacies of her embroidered dress, adorned with delicate floral patterns and intricate geometric designs. The crescent moon and stars emblazoned on her chest reveal her connection to the House of Anjou, a powerful European dynasty. Isabel's cloak, draped over her shoulders, is a testament to the opulence of the era. Its pointed edges and rich fabric add to her regal appearance. Her shoes, with their pointed toes and elegant lacing, complete the ensemble. The engraving also highlights Isabel's distinctive headdress, which features a diadem adorned with precious stones and a veil that covers her hair. The intricate design of the headdress, combined with her penetrating gaze, exudes an air of authority and sophistication. This illustration, drawn from various sources including tapestries, monumental effigies, illuminated manuscripts, and portraits, offers a fascinating glimpse into the fashion and history of medieval England. The Martin brothers' masterful use of handcoloring adds depth and vibrancy to the engraving, bringing Isabel's effigy to life and transporting us back in time.
