1702 1749 Countess Ctss Judith Spencer Sunderland Sutton Tichborne

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this elegant portrait, Judith Tichborne, Countess Sunderland, is depicted in the prime of her life. Born in the late 17th century, Judith was the daughter of the prominent Tichborne family. Her first marriage was to Charles Spencer, the third Earl of Sunderland, a powerful and influential figure in English politics during the early 18th century. Their union produced several children, including the future Earl of Sunderland, Charles Spencer, and Lady Anne Spencer. Following Earl Sunderland's death in 1722, Judith married Sir Robert Sutton, who later became Baronet of Dudley. This second marriage brought her into the Sutton family, which also had significant political and social standing. The portrait captures Judith's refined beauty and sophistication. She is dressed in the latest fashion of the time, with an intricately designed gown and an elaborate headdress adorned with pearls and feathers. Her expression is serene and self-assured, reflecting her status as a noblewoman and the wife of two influential men. The portrait is believed to have been painted around 1702, during her first marriage, but it could also date from the late 1730s or early 1740s, around the time of her second marriage. Regardless of the exact date, this portrait offers a glimpse into the life of a prominent and influential figure in English history. Judith's story is one of love, marriage, and political power. Her first husband, Earl Sunderland, served as Lord Chamberlain, Lord Privy Seal, and Lord President of the Council under Queen Anne. Her second husband, Sir Robert Sutton, was a Member of Parliament and a Privy Counsellor. Through her marriages, Judith became a central figure in the political and social circles of her time, leaving a lasting legacy in English history.
