Napoleon at the Siege of Toulon, 1793, (c1835). Artist: Francois Georgin
Napoleon at the Siege of Toulon, 1793, (c1835). In August the fervently anti-revolutionary port of Toulon was occupied by the Bourbons and a British, Spanish and pro-Bourbon military force, together with naval support. Paris reacted quickly and laid siege to the city on 7 September, with several attempts to recapture it failing through poor leadership by generals Jean Carteaux and Francois Doppet. Their poor performances led to a young Chef de Bataillon Napoleon Bonaparte scheming with political allies to replace them with General Jacques Dugommier. The new commander then agreed to plans put forward by Bonaparte to storm a key fort that would allow French artillery to bombard the British fleet anchored in the harbour. The attack occurred on 17 December, in which Bonaparte was wounded by a bayonet in the leg, and less than a day later the British fleet, under Admiral Lord Hood, sailed away. On the 19th revolutionary troops reoccupied Toulon earning Bonaparte promotion to general of brigade

EDITORS COMMENTS
The captivating print titled "Napoleon at the Siege of Toulon, 1793" by Francois Georgin depicts a pivotal moment in history. In this image, we witness the young and ambitious Napoleon Bonaparte strategizing with his political allies to reclaim the city of Toulon from anti-revolutionary forces. During August of 1793, Toulon fell into the hands of the Bourbons and their British, Spanish, and pro-Bourbon military supporters. Reacting swiftly, Paris initiated a siege on September 7th but faced repeated failures due to incompetent leadership by Generals Jean Carteaux and Francois Doppet. Recognizing an opportunity for change, Bonaparte conspired with his allies to replace these ineffective commanders with General Jacques Dugommier. With new leadership in place, Bonaparte proposed a daring plan to storm a crucial fort that would grant French artillery access to bombard the British fleet anchored within Toulon's harbor. On December 17th, amidst fierce combat, Bonaparte sustained a bayonet wound to his leg. However, less than twenty-four hours later on December 19th, Admiral Lord Hood's British fleet retreated as revolutionary troops successfully reoccupied Toulon. This triumph not only marked a significant turning point in Napoleon's career but also earned him promotion to general of brigade. The artwork skillfully captures this historic event through its intricate details and masterful composition. Francois Georgin's portrayal immortalizes Napoleon at one of his earliest victories—a testament to both his strategic brilliance and unwavering determination that would shape Europe's future for years to come.
