EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts the exquisite Gladiolus lemoinei hybrid 'Paul Margueritte,' a beautiful ornamental plant that was raised by Emile Lemoine in Nancy, France, around the late 19th century. The hybrid was named in honor of Paul Margueritte, a renowned horticulturist and botanist of the time. The illustration was produced by the renowned Belgian botanical illustrator J. de Bosschere and masterfully brought to life through chromolithography by Pieter de Pannemaeker. The process involved using multiple lithographic stones, each coated with a different color, to create a rich and vibrant image. Gladiolus lemoinei is a tropical and exotic plant that belongs to the iris family. It is native to Central and South America and is known for its tall, sturdy stems and large, showy flowers. The 'Paul Margueritte' hybrid is particularly noteworthy for its striking coloration, with its white petals edged in pink and red, and its distinctive yellow center. The illustration was published in the prestigious Belgian horticultural journal, Jean Linden's Illustration Horticole, in 1896. The journal was known for its high-quality botanical illustrations and was widely regarded as a leading authority on horticulture and plant cultivation during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, this beautiful image serves as a testament to the artistry and scientific curiosity of the past, as well as a reminder of the enduring beauty and allure of the natural world.
