EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures the moment of tragedy that unfolded in the city of Delft, Netherlands, on July 10, 1584: the assassination of William the Silent, Prince of Orange. Known as the "Father of his Country," William was a pivotal figure in the Dutch Revolt against Spanish rule, leading the rebellion with courage and determination. The image depicts the assassins, Balthasar Gérard and Jean de Cléves, emerging from the shadows, their weapons at the ready. In the foreground, William, dressed in a red cloak and hat, is shown seated on a horse, surrounded by his loyal guards. The assassins, hidden behind the pillars, wait for the opportune moment to strike. The assassination took place in the Prinsenhof, a former monastery that had been converted into a fortified residence for William. Gérard, a disgruntled soldier in the Spanish army, had long harbored a desire for revenge against the Prince. He and Cléves had managed to gain entry to the Prinsenhof under the guise of bearing a message from the Spanish governor. As William dismounted to speak with them, Gérar pulled out a pistol and fired, mortally wounding the Prince. William's guards quickly reacted, killing both assassins in the ensuing chaos. The print vividly conveys the shock and disbelief that must have gripped the city and the Dutch resistance upon hearing of the assassination. This momentous event marked a turning point in the Dutch Revolt, galvanizing the Dutch people to redouble their efforts to secure their independence from Spanish rule. William's legacy lived on, and he remains a revered figure in Dutch history.
