False-colour SEM of secondary oocyte & polar body
Human egg. False-colour scanning electron micrograph of a human egg (primary oocyte) at the end of the first meiotic division, occurring just before ovulation. At this stage the primary oocyte is split into two cells, known as the secondary oocyte (green) and the first polar body (yellow), each containing 23 chromosomes. If after ovulation the secondary oocyte is penetrated by a spermatozoon, it completes the second meiotic division producing a fertilised mature oocyte and one polar body. The first polar body divides into two and all three polar bodies shortly degenerate. Magnification: x700 at 6x7cm size. x1115 at 4x5ins

Female Reproductive System Oocyte Ovulation Ovum Re Production Secondary Secondary Oocyte False Coloured
EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a human egg at a crucial stage just before ovulation. Through false-colour scanning electron microscopy, we are granted an extraordinary glimpse into the world of reproduction and the female reproductive system. The primary oocyte is depicted here, having undergone its first meiotic division, resulting in two distinct cells: the secondary oocyte and the first polar body. The secondary oocyte takes on a mesmerizing green hue in this image, while its counterpart, the first polar body, shines brightly in yellow. Both these cells contain 23 chromosomes each, poised for potential fertilization by a spermatozoon post-ovulation. Should fertilization occur successfully, the second meiotic division will take place within the secondary oocyte to produce a matured and fertilized oocyte alongside another polar body. Remarkably magnified at x700 (6x7cm size) or x1115 (4x5ins), this photograph not only captures scientific precision but also evokes wonderment about life's beginnings. It serves as a testament to our relentless pursuit of knowledge regarding reproduction and anatomy. As we explore this microcosmic realm through visual artistry like this print from Science Photo Library, we gain deeper insights into one of nature's most miraculous processes – conception itself.
