The Kuwait water towers, Kuwait
Kuwaiti water towers, Kuwait.
In 1965, the government of Kuwait commissioned a Swedish engineering company to develop and implement a plan for a modern water-supply system for Kuwait City. The company built five groups of water towers, 31 in total, designed by its chief architect Sune LindstrAom, called the mushroom towers.
This group of towers was given the name Kuwait Towers which translates to Arabic as Abraj Al-Kuwait, and since its opening in February 1977, has been regarded as a symbol of national identity.
In 2014 the group of these water towers including the famous Kuwait towers, that were added later, were submitted to Unesco to be listed on the Unesco world heritage list. At the moment they are still on the tentative list

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic Kuwait water towers, also known as the Kuwaiti water towers. In 1965, the government of Kuwait enlisted a Swedish engineering company to create a modern water-supply system for Kuwait City. The result was an impressive collection of 31 mushroom-shaped water towers designed by chief architect Sune LindstrAom. Named Abraj Al-Kuwait in Arabic, these towers have become synonymous with national identity since their inauguration in February 1977. Their unique design and grandeur make them a famous landmark that attracts tourists from around the world. In recognition of their cultural significance, this group of water towers, including the renowned Kuwait Towers added later on, was nominated for inclusion on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2014. Although they currently remain on the tentative list, their potential future designation would solidify their status as a global treasure. The photograph beautifully captures these magnificent structures against a backdrop of clear blue skies and shimmering waters. The low angle view emphasizes their grandeur and elegance while showcasing their circular shape and striped exteriors. Frans Sellies skillfully brings out every detail in this image through his photography expertise. This stunning print is not only visually appealing but also serves as a reminder of Kuwait's commitment to progress and innovation in providing essential resources to its people.
