Bottoms Dream, 1872. Artist: Joseph Swain
Bottoms Dream, 1872. Nick Bottom, representative of the British labourer, is being relieved of the asss head by Mr Punch in a scene from A Midsummer Nights Dream. Since the death of her beloved Albert, Queen Victoria had withdrawn almost totally from public life. However, the needs of her large family had made increasing demands upon the public purse, and there had been a growth in the number of noisy republican activists. Ten years after the death of Prince Albert, though, the Prince of Wales had been struck down with typhoid fever and for some days his life had hung in the balance. Upon his recovery, a thanksgiving service had been held at St Pauls at the end of February 1872, and this is referred to in the newspaper headline. The illness of the Prince of Wales had awakened a dormant loyalty in the people. From Punch, or the London Charivari, March 9, 1872

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Bottoms Dream, 1872" captures a significant moment in British history. Created by renowned artists Joseph Swain and John Tenniel, the image depicts Nick Bottom, symbolizing the British labourer, having his asss head removed by Mr Punch in a scene from Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. During this time, Queen Victoria had withdrawn from public life following the death of her beloved husband Albert. However, the growing demands on the public purse due to her large family and the rise of republican activists had caused unrest within society. In 1872, Prince of Wales fell gravely ill with typhoid fever. His recovery sparked a renewed sense of loyalty among the people towards their monarchy. A thanksgiving service was held at St Paul's Cathedral to celebrate his survival. The newspaper headline referenced in this artwork alludes to this event and highlights how it awakened dormant loyalty within society. The illustration serves as both a caricature and satire on politics during that era. With its monochrome black-and-white aesthetic, this engraving showcases Swain's artistic prowess while capturing an important moment in British history. It is a testament to the enduring legacy of Queen Victoria and King Edward VII (then Prince Edward), who would go on to become one of Britain's most influential monarchs. This heritage image partnership between Swain and Tenniel offers viewers an intriguing glimpse into 19th-century literature and political commentary through artistry at its finest.
