EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the enigmatic figure of Hermann Goring, a man who went from being a decorated World War I pilot to becoming one of the most powerful figures in Nazi Germany. Here, Goring is depicted in his role as Reichmarshal and Head of the Lufwaffe, the German air force, during World War II. With a determined expression and piercing gaze, Goring stands before a backdrop of various types of aircraft, symbolizing his significant influence over the German aviation industry. Goring, born on January 12, 1893, began his military career as a pilot in the Imperial German Army Air Service during World War I. He was a brave and skilled aviator, earning the Pour le Merite, the highest military decoration in the German Empire, for shooting down 22 enemy planes. After the war, Goring became a founding member of the Freikorps, paramilitary units that helped suppress the German Revolution. He then joined the newly formed German Workers' Party, which would later become the Nazi Party. In the 1930s, Goring rose to prominence in the Nazi regime, serving as Minister of Aviation and Commander-in-Chief of the Luftwaffe. He was instrumental in the expansion and modernization of the German air force, which became a crucial component of the Nazi war machine. In 1940, Goring was appointed as Reichsmarschall, the highest military rank in the German military, and was second in command to Adolf Hitler. This photograph, taken during the height of Goring's power, captures the essence of a man who embodied the spirit of the German military and aviation industries during the tumultuous period of the 20th century. The planes in the background serve as a reminder of the significant role that aviation played in the events leading up to and during World War II.
