Original Bailey Bridge over the River Dives, Robehomme
This is one of the few remaining, perhaps the only one, of the bridges built by the Engineers to replace original structures over the River Dives that were destroyed at dawn on D-Day. Just visible in the centre of the right hand end of the brick wall is a small plaque that commemorates the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion and the 3rd Parachute Squadron. Date: 2009

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Original Bailey Bridge spanning the River Dives in Robehomme, Normandy, France. Built by the British Royal Engineers in 1944, this bridge is one of the few remaining structures of its kind, and is believed to be the only one still standing that was constructed to replace original bridges destroyed during the early hours of D-Day on June 6, 1944. The Original Bailey Bridge was a vital link in the Allied invasion, enabling the rapid advance of troops and supplies into the heart of Normandy. The bridge's enduring presence is marked by a small, unassuming plaque, just visible in the center of the right-hand end of the brick wall. This commemorative plaque pays tribute to the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion and the 3rd Parachute Squadron, who played a pivotal role in the capture of the bridge and the securing of the area during the early stages of the invasion. The Original Bailey Bridge stands as a testament to the engineering prowess and determination of the Allied forces during World-War II. Its enduring presence serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by the troops who fought to secure a foothold in Europe and ultimately, the eventual victory of the Allies. This photograph, taken in 2009, captures a moment in history that continues to resonate with the legacy of the D-Day landings and the indomitable spirit of those who fought in the war.
