"Wilkess Cottage", Isle of Wight, 1844. Creator: Unknown
" Wilkess Cottage", Isle of Wight, 1844. The home of British politician, radical and journalist John Wilkes:once the residence of the celebrated, or rather notorious, John Wilkes. It stands contiguous to Sandown Fort, built to command the wide-spreading bay of the same name. The cottage is, indeed, a charming reclusion, and, to Wilkes, must have been a delightful retreat from mob popularity; and would have proved so, especially after the patriot became, to use his own words, " A fire burned out". From " Illustrated London News", 1844, Vol I

Wilkess Cottage
EDITORS COMMENTS
, Isle of Wight, 1844. This print takes us back to the enchanting residence of one of Britain's most intriguing figures - John Wilkes. Nestled next to Sandown Fort, strategically positioned to overlook the vast bay that shares its name, this charming cottage provided a peaceful sanctuary for the renowned politician, radical thinker, and journalist. For Wilkes, who had experienced both adoration and infamy from the masses throughout his career, this idyllic retreat must have been a welcome escape from the tumultuous waves of public opinion. As he once described it himself, it was "a fire burned out". The Illustrated London News captured this picturesque scene in 1844 with their detailed engraving. The image transports us to 19th century England, offering a glimpse into Victorian architecture and landscape. The simplicity and elegance of Wilkess Cottage stand as a testament to an era long gone by. Although its creator remains unknown today, their artistry has immortalized this historic dwelling for generations to come. This print serves as a window into history; it allows us to appreciate not only the physical beauty of Wilkess Cottage but also its significance within British society during that time period. It is a reminder that even those who shape nations need moments of respite amidst their pursuits.
