EDITORS COMMENTS
This triptych print, titled "Triptych with Scenes from the Life of St John the Baptist" is a masterpiece that transports viewers into the biblical world. Created by Jan van Coninxloo (II) in 1557, this panel painting showcases intricate details and vibrant colors through its use of oil paint. In the center panel, we witness an intense scene where John the Baptist admonishes the Pharisees, accompanied by two disciples and Christ himself. The background on the left reveals Johannes baptizing in the Jordaan river. On the left side panel, we observe John's powerful preaching while two soldiers stand in awe before him. Meanwhile, on the right side panel, we are presented with a significant moment - Christ's baptism in Jordan - juxtaposed against Herod's banquet and ultimately leading to John's tragic beheading. The external panels offer additional elements to contemplate. On one side stands John himself holding onto a lamb symbolizing purity and sacrifice as he fulfills his divine mission. On the other side kneels Berbel or Barbara van der Noot alongside Saint Barbara herself. Originally crafted for a Benedictine monastery near Brussels called Groot-Bijgaarden, this altarpiece holds deep religious significance within its composition. With its integrated list providing further context about each scene depicted, it serves as both an artistic treasure and spiritual guide for those who engage with it today.
