EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph depicts the Eastern Prickly Pear, Opuntia ficus-indica, also known as Opuntia vulgaris, a cactus native to the Indian subcontinent. The image is based on an illustration by Lena Lowis, created during her time in India with her husband, Lt.-Col. Ninian Lowis. The intricately detailed print, published by L. Reeve in London in 1878 as part of her collection 'Familiar Indian Flowers with Coloured Plates,' showcases the Eastern Prickly Pear's unique features. Despite its name, the Eastern Prickly Pear is not truly a pear but rather a type of cactus. Its pads, or cladodes, are covered in small, barbed spines that give the plant its common name. However, some varieties of this cactus can be spineless. The pads are typically green, but they can range in color from yellow to red, and they are covered in small, yellow or pink flowers. The Eastern Prickly Pear is an important food source for both humans and animals in its native habitat. The pads can be eaten cooked or raw, and they are rich in nutrients, including vitamin C and calcium. The fruit, or tunas, are also edible and are high in antioxidants. Lena Lowis's beautiful illustration captures the Eastern Prickly Pear's unique beauty and the intricacies of its form. Her meticulous attention to detail and the vibrant colors of the handcolouring bring the cactus to life, making this a stunning addition to any botanical collection.
