EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a poignant moment in the life of Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna of Russia, later known as Princess Wilhelm of Sweden (1890-1958). The image, taken in 1910, shows the young grand duchess with her only son, Prince Lennart, Duke of Småland and later Count Bernadotte af Wisborg. Maria Pavlovna was the granddaughter of Emperor Alexander II of Russia and a first cousin of Nicholas II, the last Tsar of Russia. Her early life was marked by tragedy, as she witnessed the death of her mother in 1891 and her father's banishment from Russia in 1902 after he remarried a commoner. Raised in Moscow by her uncle, Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich, and his wife, Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna of Russia, Maria Pavlovna's upbringing was steeped in the grandeur and tradition of the Russian imperial court. In 1908, she married Prince Wilhelm of Sweden, Duke of Södermanland, in a lavish ceremony held in St. Petersburg. The marriage was unhappy, and the couple divorced in 1914. Despite the challenges of her personal life, Maria Pavlovna remained devoted to her family and her Russian heritage. She continued to wear the diamonds and other jewels that had been given to her as a wedding gift from her grandmother, Empress Maria Feodorovna, and passed them down to her descendants. In later years, she became a patron of the arts and a supporter of various charitable causes. This photograph captures a tender moment between mother and son, a reminder of the complex and often tumultuous history of the Russian and Swedish royal families in the early 20th century.
