EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning photograph captures the majesty of the SS Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse as she cuts through the waves at sea in 1900. Built by the Vulcan Shipyards at Stettin, this North German Lloyd liner was an engineering marvel of its time, designed with the ambitious goal of winning the coveted Blue Riband for the fastest Transatlantic crossing. Launched in December 1897 in the presence of the Kaiser himself, the Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse made history by completing the Transatlantic run in just 5 days and 20 hours in the same year, claiming the Blue Riband title. The ship served the Transatlantic route until the outbreak of war in 1914, when she was taken over by the German Navy as an auxiliary cruiser. In August of that year, the Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse met her unfortunate end when she was attacked and sunk by HMS Highflyer off the coast of Ireland. This photograph is a testament to the grandeur and historical significance of the Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse, a symbol of German maritime prowess and innovation during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The image captures the essence of a bygone era, offering a glimpse into the past and reminding us of the incredible feats of engineering and exploration that have shaped our world.
