Igor Tamm, Soviet nuclear physicist
Igor Yevgenyevich Tamm (1895-1971), Soviet nuclear physicist and mathematician. Tamm shared the 1958 Nobel Prize in Physics with Cherenkov and Frank. Tamms contribution was the interpretation of the Cherenkov effect, where high-energy particles moving through water may exceed the velocity of light in that medium, producing a " wake" of light called Cherenkov radiation. Tamm also studied crystallo-optics, the theory of relativity, quantum mechanics, and thermonuclear reactions. He was a Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Photographed in 1969, in Moscow, Russia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library captures the brilliance of Igor Tamm, a renowned Soviet nuclear physicist and mathematician. Born in 1895, Tamm's contributions to the field of physics were nothing short of extraordinary. In 1958, he was honored with the Nobel Prize in Physics alongside Cherenkov and Frank for his groundbreaking interpretation of the Cherenkov effect. The image depicts Tamm at the age of 74, photographed in Moscow in 1969. With a warm smile on his face, this distinguished scientist exudes wisdom and intellect. As a member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, Tamm delved into various areas including crystallo-optics, quantum mechanics, relativity, and thermonuclear reactions. Tamm's most notable achievement lies in his understanding of the Cherenkov effect – an intriguing phenomenon where high-energy particles surpassing light speed within water create a luminous "wake" known as Cherenkov radiation. This discovery revolutionized our comprehension of particle physics. As we gaze upon this historical portrait captured by Science Photo Library, we are reminded not only of Tamm's remarkable scientific accomplishments but also his significant impact on advancing our knowledge about the fundamental workings of nature. His legacy continues to inspire generations to push boundaries and unravel mysteries that lie beyond our current understanding.
