EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic print from the 1984 England Tour of South Africa, we witness a groundbreaking moment in rugby history. The first test match between South Africa and England took place at the Boet Erasmus Stadium in Port Elizabeth, and it was a game that would forever be remembered for its significance. Captured in action is South Africa's fly-half Errol Tobias, skillfully maneuvering the ball amidst intense competition. As he focuses on his next move, England's Huw Davies can be seen desperately attempting to cover back, showcasing the intensity of the match. However, what truly sets this image apart is not just the athleticism displayed but also the trailblazing representation it signifies. Errol Tobias holds a special place in rugby history as he became the first black man to play for South Africa when he made his debut three years prior in 1981. This match marked another milestone as winger Avril Williams joined him on international duty, making them both pioneers as they became the first two black players ever selected for Springboks. This powerful photograph serves as a reminder of how sports can break barriers and pave new paths towards inclusivity and diversity. It encapsulates an important chapter in rugby union where talent transcended racial boundaries and opened doors for future generations.
