Scene from Little Red Riding Hood, 1900. This fairy tale, common to Germany, Sweden and France appears in Histoires ou Contes du temps passe (Tales of Times Past) by Charles Perrault, Paris 1697, translated into English c1729. Red Riding Hood is sent by her mother with a basket of cake and butter for her sick grandmother. On her way she meets a wolf and tells him her errand. He rushes ahead, devours grandmother, puts on her clothes and jumps into her bed. When Red Riding Hood arrives, he gobbles her up too. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a scene from the timeless fairy tale, Little Red Riding Hood, brought to life by artist Tom Browne in 1900. The image depicts the innocent and unsuspecting Red Riding Hood on her way to visit her sick grandmother with a basket of cake and butter. Unbeknownst to her, danger lurks in the form of a menacing wolf she encounters along the path. The vibrant colors of nature surround them as they walk through the enchanting forest. The young girl's red cape stands out against the greenery, symbolizing both her innocence and vulnerability. Meanwhile, the cunning wolf disguises himself as Red Riding Hood's beloved grandmother after devouring her. This iconic story has been passed down through generations across Germany, Sweden, and France since its publication by Charles Perrault in 1697. In this version of events translated into English around 1729, it is ultimately a huntsman who comes to their rescue. Tom Browne masterfully captures both the beauty and treachery within this folk story through his detailed chromolithograph technique. This print serves as a reminder that even amidst innocence and tranquility lies hidden danger waiting to pounce upon those unaware. As we gaze at this artwork from over a century ago, we are transported into an imaginary world where fiction intertwines with reality—a testament to how literature can transcend time and continue captivating audiences for centuries to come.
