EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Sir Thomas Gresham, a prominent figure in 16th century England. The image, taken in 1830 by an unknown creator, showcases Gresham's distinguished appearance with his bearded face and traditional clothing. Sir Thomas Gresham was not only an English merchant and financier but also a diplomat who played a significant role in the reigns of King Edward VI, Queen Mary I, and Queen Elizabeth I. Educated at St Paul's School and Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, he possessed both intellect and ambition. One of his notable achievements was the establishment of the Royal Exchange in London's City in 1565. This iconic building became a hub for commerce and trade during that era.
