EDITORS COMMENTS
This cartoon, titled "The Wife of a Soldier - And you, who never wanted to carry anything!" is a humorous depiction of the unexpected challenges of wartime life by the renowned French artist, Cheri Häfele, also known as Chéret Haüme. The image was likely published in the prestigious French magazine, La Vie Parisienne around 1916, during the height of World War I. Before gaining recognition for his iconic poster designs and advertisements, Häfele's first printed artwork appeared in Le Journal de la Jeunesse in 1902. He later collaborated with various publications such as Mon Journal, La Semaine de Suzette, and Petit Journal de la Jeunesse. However, it was his partnership with La Vie Parisienne that brought him significant acclaim. In this charming cartoon, the artist humorously portrays a woman, seemingly reluctant to carry anything, now burdened with her soldier husband's military kit. The image encapsulates the unexpected realities of wartime life and the sacrifices made by families during this period. The Allies and Allied Powers, including France, were deeply involved in the First Great War, also known as World War I, and this cartoon serves as a poignant reminder of the far-reaching impact of military conflict on civilians. Häfele's artistic talent and keen sense of humor shine through in this print, making it an invaluable addition to any collection focusing on historical cartoons, wartime art, or the history of French illustration.
