LFB Fireboat attending a fire at Colonial Wharf
A fireboat tackles a fire at Colonial Wharf. A typical big Thameside fire of the sort which the London fire Brigade had tackled over 100 years: Colonial Wharf, Wapping High Street, E1, 27th September 1935. This nine-storey warehouse was full of crude rubber and burned for four days, during which time a number of explosions took place. Sixty pumps twenty special appliances and three fireboats, manned in all by 600 firefighters, fought the huge blaze: they successfully prevented fire spread to the surrounding warehouses. Date: 1935

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, a London Fire Brigade fireboat valiantly battles a raging inferno at Colonial Wharf along the Thames in Wapping, East London, on the 27th of September 1935. The nine-story warehouse, filled with crude rubber, had been engulfed in flames for days, and the situation was further complicated by a series of explosions that occurred throughout the ordeal. The London Fire Brigade had faced such challenges numerous times over the past century, and they were well-prepared for this formidable task. With over 600 firefighters, 60 pumps, and 20 special appliances, they mobilized three fireboats to tackle the blaze. The fireboats, equipped with powerful jets and capable of dousing the flames from the water, proved to be an essential asset in preventing the fire from spreading to the surrounding warehouses and causing even more damage. The scene is a testament to the bravery and determination of the firefighters, who worked tirelessly to contain the fire and protect the surrounding area. The iconic London landmarks, such as the Tower Bridge and the cranes and barges at the docks, can be seen in the background, adding to the historical context of this significant event. The fire at Colonial Wharf burned for four days, but the London Fire Brigade's efforts ultimately proved successful in saving the nearby structures and minimizing the impact on the community. This photograph, captured in 1935, stands as a reminder of the crucial role firefighters play in protecting our cities and communities from the destructive power of fire.
