He ruled with Lucius Verus as co-emperor from 161 until Verus death in 169. He was the last of the Five Good Emperors, and is also considered one of the most important Stoic philosophers.
Found near Brackley, Northamptonshire, the half-life-sized portrait (16.2cm high) was hollow-cast in heavily leaded bronze, using iron spacers, traces of which may still be seen on the top of the head, inside and out.); eAshmolean Museum; out of copyright
