EDITORS COMMENTS
Dante's Dream, 1871, (c1912) is a captivating print that showcases the artistic brilliance of Dante Gabriel Rossetti. This masterpiece, housed in the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, beautifully depicts a passage from La Vita Nuova by Dante Alighieri. Rossetti, a renowned British poet, illustrator, painter, and translator was deeply influenced by medieval art and literature. His fascination with Dante Alighieri's work is evident in this painting as he skillfully brings to life the emotions and themes found within La Vita Nuova. The artist's personal life also played a significant role in his creations. Rossetti married Elizabeth Siddal who served as his muse for many paintings including 'Beata Beatrix'. Tragically, he painted this iconic piece just one year after her untimely death. In addition to his individual achievements, Rossetti co-founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood alongside William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais. He later ventured into decorative arts through Morris & Co. , forming a close bond with William Morris' wife Jane who became another source of inspiration for him. This particular print comes from Lucien Pissarro's book 'Rossetti - Masterpieces in Colour', published around 1912. It offers viewers an opportunity to appreciate the rich colors and intricate details of Rossetti's original oil painting. Dante's Dream serves as a testament to Rossetti's mastery of capturing human emotion and his ability to intertwine various artistic influences into one breathtaking composition.
