EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative portrait captures Dorothy Percy, Countess of Leicester (nee Dorothy Sidney) in the twilight of her life. Dorothy was born in the late 1520s as the eldest daughter of the 6th Earl of Northumberland, Henry Percy, and his wife, Lady Catherine Neville. Her marriage to Robert Sidney, 2nd Earl of Leicester, took place in 1551, marking the beginning of a remarkable union that would span over three decades. The Countess is depicted in elegant attire, adorned with pearls and a richly embroidered collar, her expressive eyes conveying a sense of wisdom and intelligence. Her hair, styled in intricate braids and curls, frames a face that has weathered the passage of time with grace and dignity. Dorothy's life was marked by tragedy and triumph. She was a devoted wife and mother, bearing her husband ten children, seven of whom survived to adulthood. However, she was also widowed twice, first in 1586 when her husband, Earl Robert, died, and later in 1601 when her second husband, Thomas Sackville, 1st Earl of Dorset, passed away. Throughout her life, Dorothy was known for her beauty, charm, and generosity. She was a patron of the arts, supporting poets, musicians, and artists, and was also a generous benefactor to charities and religious institutions. Her legacy endures through her children, many of whom went on to hold prominent positions in English society, and through the beautiful homes and gardens she created, including the famous gardens at Wimpole Hall in Cambridgeshire. This portrait, created by the renowned artist Anthony Dyck (or Dyke, or Dyk), offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable woman who defied the conventions of her time and left an indelible mark on English history.
