EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, born in 121 AD as Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, who later adopted the name Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Augustus. He ruled the Roman Empire from 161 to 180 AD, sharing the throne with his co-emperor Lucius Verus from 161 to 169 AD. The image is a copperplate engraving, taken from Abraham Bogaerts' seminal work "De Roomsche Monarchy," published in Utrecht, Netherlands, in 1697. The 17th-century masterpiece, "The Roman Monarchy," is a comprehensive collection of portraits of the Roman Caesars and Kaisers, offering an intriguing glimpse into the rich history of the ancient Roman Empire. Marcus Aurelius is renowned for being a philosopher-king, penning the influential Stoic text "Meditations," which has survived to the present day. His reign was marked by military campaigns against the Parthians and Germanic tribes, as well as the Antonine Plague, which devastated the empire. In this portrait, Marcus Aurelius is depicted wearing a laurel wreath and toga, the traditional attire of Roman rulers. His stern expression and piercing gaze convey the gravity and wisdom of a leader who ruled during a time of great turmoil and change. The intricate details of the engraving, from the folds of his toga to the subtle textures of his facial features, serve as a testament to the skill and artistry of Abraham Bogaerts and the masterful craftsmanship of the copperplate engraving process.
