Exterior view of the former Jordans showroom and Grattan
Exterior view of the former Jordans showroom and Grattans catalogue building on Story Street in Hull, 27th September 1971.
This was taken to illustrate a story on this building being due for demolition but the Jordans history goes further back than that.
Their first premises opened on the site in 1936 in buildings very similar to the ones to the right of this image. The Blitz raids in May, 1941, destroyed this section of buildings on Story Street, the pictured building was erected in peacetime.
Although taken in 1971, its demolition started in late January, 2010, to make way for the Wilberforce Health Centre which was opened by Hull West and Hessle MP Alan Johnson on February 10th, 2012.
The inset picture was taken in March, 2010, during the demolition process

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the exterior view of the former Jordans showroom and Grattans catalogue building on Story Street in Hull, taken on September 27th, 1971. The image serves as a poignant illustration of the impending demolition of this historic structure, although its roots trace back much further than that. The first premises of Jordans opened on this very site in 1936, occupying buildings that bore a striking resemblance to those seen to the right in this photograph. Unfortunately, during the devastating Blitz raids in May 1941, this section of buildings was destroyed. In peacetime, however, the pictured building was erected as a testament to resilience and progress. Although captured in 1971, it wasn't until late January 2010 that demolition work commenced on this iconic landmark. Making way for the Wilberforce Health Centre which would later be inaugurated by Hull West and Hessle MP Alan Johnson on February 10th, 2012. The inset picture provides an intriguing glimpse into March 2010 when the demolition process was underway. This snapshot encapsulates both nostalgia for what once stood proudly and anticipation for what lies ahead. Jim Mitchell's expert photography skillfully preserves these significant moments from our past while reminding us of how cities evolve over time.
