EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Amelia of Orleans, the esteemed Queen of Portugal during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Painted by the talented artist Camacho, this portrait beautifully captures her regal presence and timeless elegance. Amelia was born in 1865 as the eldest daughter of Prince Philippe, Count of Paris, and Princess Marie Isabelle d'Orleans. In 1886, she married Carlos, Prince Royal of Portugal, who later ascended to the throne in 1889. Known affectionately as Maria Amelia by her subjects, she became a beloved figure in Portuguese history. Tragically, Carlos was assassinated in 1908 which led to Amelia's departure from Portugal after the Revolution of 1910. She spent most of her remaining years living in exile within France. In this exquisite portrait, Queen Amelia dons a resplendent crown and tiara befitting her royal status. Her attire reflects the fashion trends prevalent during that era with a stunning Victorian dress adorned with intricate jewelry including a necklace and brooch. The photograph not only captures Queen Amelia's beauty but also serves as a poignant reminder of an influential period for both Portugal and its monarchy. As we gaze upon this image today, we are transported back to an enchanting time when royalty reigned supreme amidst opulence and grace.
