EDITORS COMMENTS
The Fight for the Standard at the Battle of Pinkie, near Musselburgh, Scotland, 10 September 1547, was a pivotal moment during the War of the Rough Wooing, part of the Anglo-Scottish Wars. In this historic image, Sir Andrew Flammack, a brave English knight, is seen surrounded by a throng of determined Scottish soldiers. The King's Standard, a symbol of English sovereignty, is held aloft in Sir Andrew's hand, but its staff has broken, leaving him vulnerable. The year was 1547, and the 1540s were a time of intense conflict between England and Scotland. The Tudor monarch, King Henry VIII, sought to secure a political marriage between his son, Prince Edward, and Mary, Queen of Scots, in a bid to solidify peace between the two nations. However, the Scots, led by their Regent, the Earl of Arran, resisted, leading to a series of battles that would come to be known as the Rough Wooing. Amidst the chaos of the Battle of Pinkie, Sir Andrew Flammack, bearing the Standard, found himself in a precarious position. Surrounded by Scottish troops, he was on the brink of being overpowered. But just as all hope seemed lost, Sir Ralph Coppinger, a fellow English knight, appeared on the scene. With swift and decisive action, Sir Ralph rescued Sir Andrew, allowing him to retain the Standard, despite its broken staff. This image, captured in the 16th century, provides a glimpse into the intense fighting and bravery that characterized the Anglo-Scottish Wars. The soldiers, clad in armor and donning helmets, charge into battle on horseback, their weapons at the ready. The horses, too, are a testament to the era, their powerful forms poised for action. The crisis at Pinkie was a turning point in the War of the Rough Wooing, and this moment, where Sir Andrew's Standard was saved, is a testament to the resilience and determination of those involved.
