EDITORS COMMENTS
In this enchanting photograph, Princess Cecilie of Greece, one of the four elder sisters of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, is seen cradling her eldest child, Prince Ludwig of Hesse and by Rhine, in the year 1932. The Princess, born in 1911, was the fourth daughter and sixth child of King Constantine I of Greece and Queen Sophia of Prussia. Princess Cecilie's marriage to Ernst Ludwig, Hereditary Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine, took place on May 12, 1931, in Athens, Greece. The union between the Greek and German royal families was significant, as it strengthened the ties between the two European monarchies. The couple's firstborn child, Prince Ludwig, was born on October 3, 1931, in Darmstadt, Germany. The Princess's gentle expression and loving gaze towards her newborn son convey the profound joy and happiness that comes with motherhood. The elegant and refined setting of the portrait, with its soft lighting and muted colors, adds to the serene and peaceful atmosphere. The image captures a precious moment in the lives of the young royal family, as they embark on their journey together. Princess Cecilie's life was tragically cut short when she and her husband were killed in a car accident on November 13, 1937, in Berchtesgaden, Germany. The loss of the beloved Princess left a deep mark on her family and the European royal community. This poignant photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the Princess's enduring legacy and the love she shared with her family, particularly her eldest son, Prince Ludwig.
