This vintage print showcases the "Australia Gotha, Justus Perthes, 1872" atlas, a remarkable work by German publisher Johan Georg Justus Perthes. Born in Rudolstadt in 1749, Perthes established his renowned business, Justus Perthes, in Gotha in 1785. In 1814, his son Wilhelm joined him and laid the foundation of the Geographical Branch of the company. One of their notable publications was Adolf Stieler's and-Atlas (1817-1823), which engaged esteemed German geographers like Heinrich Berghaus and Karl Spruler. The legacy continued as Wilhelm's son Bernard Wilhelm Perthes took over the business until his passing in 1857. The firm also introduced the Almanach de Gotha in 1863—a comprehensive annual publication featuring statistical data, historical information, and genealogy from various countries worldwide. This image captures Lake Gairdner and Lake Torrens within Australia's vast landscape. Its engraved technique adds an artistic touch to this Victorian-era piece from Liszt Collection's archives. With its retro-styled charm and cultural significance, this print transports us back to a time when cartography played a vital role in understanding our world.
