Heart-op teacher June Mankin knew she was onto a winner when she asked athlete colleague
Heart-op teacher June Mankin knew she was onto a winner when she asked athlete colleague John Williams to run for her favourite charity. But what she didn t expect was for the cause to be picked up by children from the Dene School, Thornaby, and a total of £ 850 raised for the British Heart Foundation. Our picture shows the cheque being presented to cardiologist Dr Stewart Hunter, the chairman of the BHFs Northern Region, left, by third-year pupil Deborah Rowden, the top money raiser, watched by other pupils centre left to right; Joanne Coakley, Susan Hornsby and Clare Leeming; Mr Williams, backk left, and Miss Mankin. 18th July 1986

EDITORS COMMENTS
Heart-op teacher June Mankin had a brilliant idea when she approached her athletic colleague John Williams to run for her favorite charity. Little did she know that the cause would be embraced by the children of Dene School in Thornaby, resulting in an astounding £850 raised for the British Heart Foundation. The heartwarming moment was captured in our photo print. In the picture, we see third-year pupil Deborah Rowden proudly presenting the cheque to cardiologist Dr Stewart Hunter, who serves as chairman of the BHFs Northern Region. Deborah was hailed as the top money raiser among her peers and stood tall with confidence as she handed over their generous donation. Surrounding them are other pupils - Joanne Coakley, Susan Hornsby, and Clare Leeming - who played a crucial role in this successful fundraising effort. Standing at the back is athlete John Williams himself, whose involvement kickstarted this incredible initiative. And right beside him is Miss Mankin herself, beaming with pride at what they have achieved together. This heartwarming event took place on July 18th, 1986 and symbolizes not only a remarkable display of community spirit but also highlights how young minds can make a significant impact when united for a noble cause.
