William Harvey, English physician
William Harvey (1578-1657), English physician. Harvey is considered the founder of modern physiology for his work on the circulation of the blood. He used dissection and experimentation to demonstrate that blood is circulated around the body by the pumping action of the heart. This contradicted the beliefs of the previous 1300 years, that blood oscillates back and forth in the blood vessels. He published these views in a celebrated treatise of 1628 (lower left). He also conducted notable embryological research, proposing that all life forms originate from an egg. He was royal physician to King James I from 1618, and to King Charles I from 1640. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the esteemed William Harvey, an influential English physician whose groundbreaking discoveries revolutionized the field of physiology. In this colored engraving from 1876, we witness a remarkable representation of Harvey, who is widely regarded as the founder of modern physiology. Harvey's pioneering work on the circulation of blood shattered long-held beliefs that had persisted for over a millennium. Through meticulous dissection and experimentation, he conclusively demonstrated that blood circulates throughout the body due to the pumping action of the heart. This pivotal finding challenged previous notions that blood merely oscillated back and forth within blood vessels. Not only did Harvey make significant contributions to our understanding of circulatory systems, but he also conducted notable research in embryology. He proposed that all life forms originate from eggs, further expanding our knowledge about reproduction and development. As royal physician to both King James I and King Charles I during critical periods in history, Harvey's expertise was highly valued. His celebrated treatise published in 1628 immortalized his revolutionary views on blood circulation. This enchanting artwork captures not only Harvey's immense intellect but also his profound impact on medical science. It serves as a testament to his enduring legacy as one of history's most influential physicians and scientists.
