EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning image is taken from John Curtis's seminal work, "British Entomology," specifically Plate 80, which was published between 1824 and 1839. The plate features two exquisitely rendered Coleoptera beetles, identified as Parnus impressus and Dryops luridus. The Impressed Parnus (Parnus impressus) is depicted on the left, its metallic green and blue exoskeleton adorned with intricate, raised patterns. The Lurid Dryops (Dryops luridus), on the right, boasts a vibrant, red-orange exoskeleton with distinctive black markings. The botanical specimen in the foreground is identified as Aster tripolium, also known as Sea Starwort. This plant is native to the shores of the North Atlantic and the Mediterranean, and its star-shaped white flowers bloom in late summer. John Curtis (1794-1862), a prolific English botanist and entomologist, created this work as part of his lifelong dedication to documenting the natural world. The plates in "British Entomology" were produced under the supervision of the renowned botanical illustrator, Ferdinand Ledrup, and were considered some of the most accurate and detailed records of their time. This image offers a glimpse into the rich biodiversity of the 19th century, showcasing the beauty and intricacy of these Coleoptera beetles and the Sea Starwort plant. The meticulous attention to detail and the high-quality printing techniques used in the production of this plate make it a valuable historical record and an enduring work of art.
