Looking towards the Dead Sea from the castle of Kerak, Jordan
Looking towards the Dead Sea from the castle of Kerak, Jordan. Not to be confused with Krak des Chevaliers in Syria, the Crusader castle of Kerak was built in the 1140s by Pagan, butler of King Fulk of Jerusalem and Lord of Transjordan. It was besieged twice by Saladin, in 1183 and again after the Battle of Hattin (1187), falling to his armies in 1189

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the breathtaking view from the castle of Kerak in Jordan, looking towards the mesmerizing Dead Sea. Standing proudly since the 12th century, this fortress was built by Pagan, a loyal servant of King Fulk of Jerusalem and Lord of Transjordan. Its historical significance is evident as it endured two sieges by Saladin; first in 1183 and then after the Battle of Hattin in 1187 when it ultimately fell to his armies in 1189. The castle's architectural grandeur showcases its medieval charm, with its sturdy fortifications and intricate details that reflect the era's craftsmanship. As you gaze upon this image, you can almost feel transported back to a time when Christianity played a significant role in shaping societies. The ruins stand today as a testament to both religious devotion and strategic defense tactics employed during those tumultuous times. The sharp contrast between the vibrant colors of nature surrounding the castle against its weathered stones adds an element of mystique to this scene. Vivienne Sharp skillfully captured this extraordinary landscape, highlighting not only its geographical features but also evoking emotions tied to history and spirituality. This print serves as a reminder that even amidst ruins, there lies beauty worth preserving for generations to come.
