EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts a collection of milkcap mushrooms (Lactarius spp.), including the Rufous Milkcap (Lactarius rufus), Weeping Milkcap (Lactifluus volemus), Mild Milkcap (Lactarius subdulcis), Candy Cap (Lactarius camphoratus), and possibly the Red Milkcap (Lactarius rubidus) or Curry Milkcap (Lactarius corrugis). The illustration is based on an original work by A. Bessin, as featured in Leon Rolland's seminal mycological guide, "Atlas des Champignons," published by Paul Klincksieck in Paris in 1910. The intricate details of the mushrooms' caps, gills, and stems are beautifully rendered in this chromolithograph by Lassus. Milkcaps are a diverse group of fungi, characterized by their white, latex-like sap that can be found when the caps are cut or bruised. These mushrooms are often found in wooded areas and are prized for their unique flavors and medicinal properties. The Rufous Milkcap, for instance, is known for its bright red cap and mildly bitter taste, while the Candy Cap is celebrated for its sweet, maple-like aroma and flavor. This print is a testament to the rich history of mycological exploration and the beauty of the fungi kingdom.
